FINISSAGE CURIOUS LITTLE SISTER CUTS FOT PURPOSE

ZOOM

The Stadsredactie of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen cordially invites you for the finissage of the project Cut for Purpose on Saturday April 22 from 5 – 11 pm in the Straatgalerij of the museum. It’s the final cut, but at the same time the official opening of the Straatgalerij!
Curious Little Sister Cuts for Purpose is the first project initiated by the Stadsredactie of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Cut for Purpose is an exploration, produced in collaboration with Stealth.[u]ltd (www.stealth.ultd.net), which examines how urban dynamics can find their way to the museum space. From February 18 until April 23, a grid of more than man-sized cardboard sheets, placed fifteen centimetres apart, has filled the entire Straatgalerij. Within this structure, during a course of nine weeks, spaces have been purpose-cut to house a variety of activities. These activities have established a series of spatial interactions based on a set of guidelines for the creation of spaces given to the participants.
The project delivers knowledge that, besides bringing valuable experiences for the future functioning of the Straatgalerij, results in several tangible programme-parts of the Stadsredactie. These ideas will, together with a presentation by Stealth.[u]ltd and performances by the participants of the project, be inaugurated on the finissage.

CURIOUS LITTLE SISTER WANTS MORE
LAST CHANCE!!

The project 'Cut for Purpose ' (18 februari t/m 23 april 2006) gave the Stadsredactie new insights how to programm in relation to what is going on in the city and the museum. Curious Little Sister Wants More lifts out four parts that have been developed during Cut for Purpose. Till July 9.

Guest Room
Because of the international and open character of the art scene of Rotterdam, partly developed because of the amount of artist-in-residencies in town and the ospitality of the Rotterdam art scene, the idea was developed to place a monitor in the Streetgallery. On this monitor works will be shown from passers-by or artists that stayed for a while in Rotterdam. This can vary from all kinds of works by musicians, designers, visual artsits or filmmakers.

Next months works by: Meris Angioletti & Boris; Eirini Linardaki & Vincent Parisot; Vanessa Renwick

Cuts and Layers. Composed Time Cuts and Time Layers of the Inside and Outside Sound over a 5 month period.
Edwin van der Heide (NL) works as an artist in the fields of sound, space and interaction. His original background is in electronic music. He graduated from the Institute for Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague in 1992. His current work is hard to define in the traditional terms of music, sound art or media art. Van der Heide operates on the edge of the medium and incorporates its characteristics.

Starting from Stadsredactie's interest for the urban dynamics in relation to the one of the museum, Van der Heide came up with the idea to fix microphones in- and outside of the museum walls that registrate the sounds in the museum and the city. These sounds are saved on a computer and can be called upon in the installation in the museum room. It is a collection of sounds that can be experienced as a voyage through time, in interior and exterior spaces. It evokes the changing museum space and the streetlife around Boijmans in the period February- June 2006.

PAUL VAN DER EERDEN: ENCLOSURES
Enclosures

WOODY'S WONDER
Woody's Wonder
An installation by Woody van Amen

Woody van Amen (Eindhoven, 1936; lives and works in Rotterdam) is considered an important artist in Rotterdam’s art scene and is a representative of Holland’s Pop Art of the 1960s. His love of experimentation with new industrial materials, his fondness for objects and his insatiable appetite for knowledge have combined to produce a large and diverse body of work.

Wonderment plays an important part in Woody van Amen’s oeuvre. His first film, now on show in the Boijmans, was inspired by his many travels around Southeast Asia over the last few decades. It shows life on the streets of Indonesia, Vietnam, Burma and Laos and deals with themes including religion, humanity and the beauty of nature.

PRESENTATION MUSEUM VAN NAGSAEL
The Van Nagsael Museum, a guest in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum

In 1992 the artist Maria Roosen made two pairs of slippers for Rigardus Rijnhout (1922-1959). This Rotterdam resident was 2.37 meters tall and until his death in 1959 was known as the Rotterdam Giant. He earned his living by appearing in all sorts of advertisements for companies that were interested in him because of his unusually large size. Rigardus Rijnhout was more or less reduced to being a Rotterdam side-show. As a token of respect for him, Maria Roosen later made two pairs of size 63 slippers for him; one pair was made of buckskin and one of sheepskin. These slippers could be seen as a metaphor for a home, a place where you belong. Roosen’s slippers were literally and figuratively aimed at reinstating Rigardus’s right to exist. In the same spirit the Rotterdam artists Silvia B. and Rolf Engelen’s aim was to provide art with an autonomous setting in Rotterdam – a small white cube. This was their motive for founding the Van Nagsael Museum, in 1995.

Van Nagsael’s – housed in a store window located at number 40, Botersloot – with a surface area of barely one quarter of a square meter – was, for the eleven years of its existence, the smallest museum in the Netherlands. The two directors, Silvia B. – responsible for programming the months with even numbers – and Rolf Engelen for the months with uneven numbers, took turns in inviting artists to make displays for the museum. The exhibitions remained on show for one month. Artists who exhibited in this way include Hans Wilschut, Ronald Cornelissen, Lisa Holden, Bibo, Ritsaert ten Cate, Karin Arink, Mark Manders & Marije Langelaar, Maaike Engelen, Jan van de Pavert, Nicolette Pot, Ben Zegers, Maja Zomer, Frank Halmans, Tanja Smeets and Driessens & Verstappen.

After eleven years of presentations, the museum recently closed for good. To mark this occasion, a book has been brought out by Veenman Publishers providing a retrospective view of eleven years of art shown in the Van Nagsael Museum. The reason why Maria Roosen’s slippers are shown in the showcase next to this book is because they played an important part in the initial discussions around setting up the Van Nagsael Museum.

The Van Nagsael Museum is a guest at the Boijmans Museum, its big brother, at a time when Boijmans is introducing a new display of its permanent collection in the Van der Steur Wing. Boijmans considers that one of its key functions is to show the collection in its best light, in the same way as the Van Nagsael, in the eleven years it existed, aimed at showing works that kept as close as possible to the essence of what art is all about – the making, the displaying and the viewing.

Marinella Senatore (Italy, 1977; lives and works in Rome and Madrid) is a visual artist and filmmaker. Her films often recount small everyday stories in which the ordinary man takes the leading role. The stories develop through the mutual relationships between images, text and objects. As Marinella says herself: ‘It isn’t the words that produce narration but what is in between them’.
In ‘I’ll never die’ we see a breakfast table laid out with cups, plates and food. A voice-over tells the mysterious story of the disappearance of a mathematician and the confinement of a certain Mr Grumberg. While the still life remains unchanged, we hear a journalistic account of a strange and dramatic incident.

GUEST ROOM: Inspired by the international and open character of Rotterdam’s art world, the City Editorial Board has installed a monitor to show work by artists they meet. These can vary from visual artists or filmmakers to musicians, always shown on DVD.

Independence Pass,2006, 3min

Eli Stertz (USA, 1980; lives and works in New York and Milan) began working as a photographer with an interest in mankind and our environment. His research into scenography since 2005 has resulted in spatial installations and several short films.
Last summer Stertz drove from New York to Colorado with a camera installed under his car. The result is a sort of semi-abstract road movie, which calls to mind science fiction and refers to the works of the nineteenth-century English painter Turner. Stertz has also made short films about a rocket launch and a helicopter.
In its form ‘Independence Pass’, named after the highest pass in the Rocky Mountains, is like a photographic exposure in which the aperture remains open for a long period. Stertz himself has referred to the act of looking out through a car window, seeing things pass you by but being unable to focus and not knowing where you are.

SOAKERS is the term for a generation of Rotterdam-based artists who have devoted themselves entirely to painting, drawing and sculpture. They develop their ideas and translate their social observations exclusively within the possibilities of these media. There is no escape. The exhibition concept is united around the mentality, perseverance and fortitude that resides in each of the works.

The exhibition SOAKERS , curated by the City Editorial Board, provides a podium for young Rotterdam-based artists at a crucial point in their development.

CURIOUS LITTLE SISTER PRESENTS:
GOLDEN YEARS
Golden Years
A presentation by Daan van G
olden

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Daan van Golden will put together a presentation at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. It is an exhibition based on his collection of newspaper photos.

The presentation at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will feature 70 newspaper photos, dating from 1936, the year Daan van Golden was born, until 2006, his 70th birthday. The subjects of the photographs are diverse. Some photographs are practically unknown, while others have become part of our collective consciousness, and evoke memories in everyone. Daan van Golden (born in 1936, lives and works in Schiedam) has always been fascinated by the beauty of newspaper photos. In the early Nineties he started collecting them. Because he found it difficult to choose, he decided to use the dates under the photographs as a selection criterion, in the hope of finding a picture for all the years of his life. For some years he found many photographs, for others hardly any.

The result is a collection of more than 70 newspaper photos that can be seen as a way to chart his own life, in the midst of a stream of big and small (cultural-)historical events during the past 70 years. There are pictures of musicians such as Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan; of artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Jan Schoonhoven, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring; of subjects like the Berlin Wall, Buchenwald, 9-11, but also of a flying duck being ‘flashed’ by a speed trap camera. The combinations of successive photographs in the ultimate presentation were partly decided by fate. The way the photographs are ordered is important to Van Golden: on the one hand, the rhythm in the various sizes plays a part, on the other hand the rhyming images in the subject matter. For instance, a picture of Big Jay McNeely playing the saxophone surrounded by his audience in 1951 is followed by one of Pygmies in the Congo, listening to recordings of their own music.

Daan van Golden
The work of Daan van Golden has regularly been shown at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. From the Sixties onwards he makes meticulously painted copies of handkerchiefs and fabrics with diamond motifs, flower motifs on gift wrappers and other decorative patterns. The variety of the images gradually increased. He possesses a keen eye for beauty and detail. While he mainly worked as a painter at the start of his career, from the late Seventies onwards Van Golden became more and more interested in photography, and exhibitions of his photographs were organized.
During the past thirty years he’s had exhibitions, at long intervals because of his many travels, at, among others, Konsthallen Göteborg; Le Consortium, Centre d’Art Contemporain in Dijon; the Stedelijk Museum; Galerie Micheline Szwajcer; Art & Project and the Naiqua Gallery in Tokyo. Van Golden participated in the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Lyon (2003), the XLVIIIth Venice Biennale (1999) and the Documenta (1968). His work is part of, among others, the Caldic Collection, the Collection Becht, the Collection Visser and the collections of the Stedelijk Museum and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Antistrot, Stichting B.a.d., Fucking Good Art, Museum Van Nagsael, PAGES, De Player, Het Wilde Weten, Wormhole

Locatie: Careof, Milaan, Italië

The exhibition space Careof in Milan is one of the few alternative exhibition spaces in Italy. At the end of January Chiara Agnello has asked me to make a presentation for Careof which reflects the alternative character of the Dutch art climate. Because of my role of City Curator at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen I have chosen to confine (?) myself to Rotterdam. From March 30 till April 2 the Mi-Art art fair takes place at which the Netherlands are 'Paese Ospite'.

The presentation I have put together deliberately includes not only artist initiatives, but especially also other alternative platforms that can be found in the city. I have opted for an overview with initiatives that want to create an alternative ‘white cube’ in the city; that focus only on a specific medium; that want to play a role in the neighbourhood, but also with initiatives that reflect on the city ’s artistic climate. All participants have in common that they create extra space and possibilities for Rotterdam’s artistic climate and that they promote (international) exchanges through an open and free character.

The artists that take part in the 'Exchanging Roles' exhibition all have in common a certain forced attention to other activities in addition to their role as artists with independent studios. This may spring from a lack of workshops and studios, the absence of a platform for contemporary drawing or of a small white cube. They do all of this, as the motto of fanzine Fucking Good Art goes, ‘in selfless service to our community’….

CURIOUS LITTLE SISTER PRESENTS:
GREETINGS FROM ROTTERDAM
Greetings from Rotterdam

In the framework of the presentation of Woody’s Wonder the City Editorial Board show the three-part series 'Groeten uit Rotterdam' (Greetings from Rotterdam) by Dick Rijneke en Mildred van Leeuwaarden. These films from 1980 tell about the Rotterdam art and music world at the end of the 70-ies and give the work of Van Amen a beautiful historical context.

Dick Rijneke and Mildred van Leeuwaarden’s films have been screened over the last few decades in museums such as MoMA in New York and the Miró Foundation in Barcelona and at many film festivals including those in Rotterdam, Berlin, Locarno and Toronto.

The screening of their renowned made for VPRO in 1980 places Woody van Amen’s work in a historical perspective. Following its controversial television broadcast, this documentary has not been shown again for more than twenty-five years. Each episode lasts an hour and deals with the Rotterdam’ s lively arts and music scene in the 1970s. To be seen is a survey of film set photos, stills, an installation and films.

ART, COFFEE AND COOKIES (episode 1)
Art: paintings and ‘pieces’ are left unguarded in an average street. What will happen? Will they be destroyed, stolen or left alone? This episode follows the events surrounding this collaborative project by the artists Cor Kraat, Bob van Persie and Hans Citroen.

A BLACK AND WHITE STATEMENT (episode 2)
A confrontation between ‘upstart’ artists and the punk generation, expressed through music and graffiti. The artists of the group Kunst & Vaarwerk, Hans Citroen, Willem van Drunen and Cor Kraat wander through Rotterdam’s harbours in search of inspiration. Hans Rothmeijer’s gallery ‘Black Cat’ holds an exhibition of graffiti, but the real punks think that g raffiti belongs on the streets. Their punk bands Tändstickorshocks, Sovjets, Rode Wig and the Rondos have united under the name Red Rock.

HUIZE SCHOONDERLOO (episode 3)
The renowned artists’ collective K.K. Dubio fight against the ‘system’ from their base ‘Huize Schoonderloo’. They have a punk band called the Rondos, their own record label KingKong Records and they publish the fanzine Raket. They have a large following among the youth. “ Which side will you be on?”

Videoclip Het Land Van….

Time Stereo is an international artists’ collective based in Detroit. The group’s permanent core comprises Davin Brainard and Warn Defever. Time Stereo’s activities are very diverse. Time Stereo began in 1993 as a music label, but now also sells animated films, hand-made clothing and art works via the website www.timestereo.com. Time Stereo’s members also perform in the bands Princess Dragonmom and His Name Is Alive. Their gigs occupy an area between art performances and concerts, varying from noise to jazz.

The short animated films with music by Time Stereo on the Guestroom monitor have everyday subjects such as a dandelion in the grass, a floating cloud or fairytale themes such as a menaced unicorn and gnomes that inhabit a gruesome underworld. The combination of these themes with figures made from felt, clay or bread dough result in a variety show with cabaret-like humour, with an atmosphere similar to that of Time Stereo’s performances.

An ode to 'the old masters'
With: SEEN, NOC 167, Zephyr

"The whole thing about graffiti is the lettering. That’s what graffiti means: becoming famous because your name is all over the city, on the trains. That’s what graffiti always says and what it should be."
Blade in: ‘Graffiti’, catalogue Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen / Groninger Museum, 1983.
This quote by the renowned New York graffiti artist Blade shows that the true value of graffiti is the mania for letters.

Graffiti originated in Philadelphia and New York. The first generation of ‘writers’ had been active there as early as the 1960s and in the 1970s Julio 204 and Taki 183 illegally wrote their nicknames known as ‘tags’ on highly visible sites in their neighbourhood. By leaving their signature in numerous spots they achieved a public identity without being directly recognisable.
In the early 1970s a second generation of writers emerged who increased their visibility by writing on the subway trains. These mobile advertising hoardings carried names such as Seen, Dondi and Lady Pink through the entire city. Their ‘tags’ were developed into ‘masterpieces’ with colourful and complex typography.
Now the competition really began: it was no longer sufficient simply to be visible in as many places as possible, but you now had to design the most original letter forms and combinations. This competitive element in the public realm distinguishes graffiti from visual art and graphic design.
As several famous graffiti artists made the transition to working on canvas graffiti seeped into New York’s art circuit and influential art dealers made a fortune from the scene.

Graffiti came to Europe a little later. In the Netherlands there were writers active since the late 1970s, mainly in the punk movement. But the more complex ‘New-York graffiti’ was taken up only in the early 1980s in Amsterdam by writers such as Jaz, Jezis and Joker. They were inspired by the pionering exhibitions of New York writers at Galerie Yaki Kornblit in Amsterdam. When the first substantial books on graffiti appeared around 1985 it was clear that there was a serious European graffiti movement – the third generation – with adherents in every European capital. Museums followed the movement; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Groninger Museum were the most important champions.

Whereas the first generation of graffiti artists had to beat a path from the street to the institutions, the younger generation landed in a fully receptive environment. However, interest in the question of the significance of graffiti in museums has dwindled and it is now rarely referred to.
This is why Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is showing several canvases acquired in the 1980s as an ode to the founding fathers of graffiti. Renowned ‘pieces’ by these writers, whether on canvas or trains, are studies and copied by young people all over the world and function as an inspiration for the development of new techniques. These ‘pieces’ have become icons: rare exemplary masterpieces that have left a lasting impression beyond the public realm.

For ‘Dolls’ she interviewed several girls from the region to the south of Naples. The girls talk frankly about their personalities and living conditions and describe their dreams and desires. Their confidence in front of the camera calls to mind photo models, pop stars and film stars. It shows their longing to be part of this other world, but also shows the painful gap between their dream world and reality. At the end of the interview they put on their best dresses and go out into the real world with a mixture of apparent self-confidence and vulnerability.

Eveline Visser, Skulls

Ed's Spiral Piece by the English artist Edwin Li (UK, 1984) appears to be a mix of 1930s Hollywood musicals, Constructivism, a dose of Walt Disney and a dash of irony. However, the film was created using so-called ‘video feedback’ resulting from a loop in which a camera is pointed at a monitor to which it is connected. This is comparable to audio feedback, which occurs when a microphone comes too close to a speaker. Li edited the raw footage and combined it with music to create a harmonious audio-visual experience that sweeps the viewer along in a story without end.

Artists Eirini Linardaki (Greece, 1976) & Vincent Parisot (France, 1975) are interested in classic visual motifs and the possibility of giving them new life within a contemporary context.

In 'Π' we see three girls standing in a pool. They have wrapped their arms around each other so that the trio calls to mind the classical sculpture 'The Three Graces’: the three goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, whose beauty was judged by the shepherd Paris. However, the girls’ bodies do not meet the classical ideal of beauty and the water looks like a muddy pool.

The film’s images express the stillness that we know from the sculpture of antiquity. The trinity of bodies stands motionless in the constant rain. The bodies and their surrounding environment do not affect each other, but simply exist side by side.

The film 'Pedro & Linh' by Meris Angioletti & Angelo Boriolo (1977, 1976; live and work in Milan) concerns the experiences of the writers Pedro Ruiz from Cuba and Linh Dinh from Vietnam as guests in a new city and a new culture.

Both writers have fled their home countries and have been offered asylum by the 'Cities of Asylum', a network offering asylum to writers and intellectuals forced into political exile. 'Cities of Asylum' was set up in 1996 by the 'International Parliament of Writers' and operates across forty cities.

In the film 'Pedro & Linh' the writers reflect upon Italian, Cuban and Vietnamese culture in relation to their experiences in the urban landscapes of Saigon, Naples, Havana and Grosseto. Ruiz and Dinh each explore and experience these cities in different ways.

GUEST ROOM: Inspired by the international and open character of Rotterdam’s art world, the City Editorial Board has installed a monitor to show work by artists they meet. These can vary from visual artists or filmmakers to musicians, always shown on DVD.

CURIOUS LITTLE SISTER COLLECTS THE CITY:
CITYCOLLECTIONSELECTION JANUARY/ FEBRUARY 2008: ANNA
(Rotterdam 1935 – Rotterdam 1980)

Rotterdam’s City Collection contains several important works by the Rotterdam-born artist Anna Verweij-Verschuure, who worked from 1958 under the name Anna.

Anna embroidered, knitted and crocheted. These techniques, with their use of systematic patterns, are in fact anonymous. But such handicrafts also evoke associations with the intimacy of domestic life. Anna played with this polarity in textile objects that are simultaneously refined and monumental. With a highly personal signature, she employed needle and thread to represent how the buried tensions of a woman’s life can explode in an uncontrolled show of emotion. An example of this is the work My Place at the Table 2 (1972/73) in which a delicately embroidered border of flowers is seamlessly transformed into an aggressive play of lines from which all the colour has been drained.
Anna’s work gained the appreciation it deserved only in the last years of her life, when she was given several solo exhibitions and a monograph was published on her work. Anna’s determination in working with needle and thread contributed greatly to the acceptance of textiles as a valid medium in the visual arts. Today many artists, including Michael Raedecker, Noëlle Cuppens, Ghada Amer and Berend Strik employ such materials to interesting effect.
